Kathy Friesen Memorial
May 27, 1943 to October 11, 2020
Last month it was with a heavy heart that The Tumbleweed Festival had to say goodbye to a driving force. On October 11th, 2020 Kathy Friesen put in her final resignation. She was with the festival from the beginning and continued to drive it forward and keep all the new board members organized and knowledgeable.
The festival is run by an all-volunteer board. This board is a working board and Kathy put in 110% every year. As a memorial to Kathy, The Tumbleweed Festival board has begun collecting money to go toward the Match Day event held by Western Kansas Community Foundation. These funds will continue to push the festival toward sustainability in these tough times.
Checks for the memorial should be made out to Western Kansas Community Foundation can be mailed to:

A remembrance by Valarie Smith, VP of The Tumbleweed Festival Board:
"Kathy Friesen is a name this town won’t soon forget or at least feel the effects of her efforts, for they will live on many years to come in the memories of bygone festivals. Those memories people recall when they think of the good old days. Times when the August sun was shining down just right and the smell of festival food dance in the air to the beat of live music. Your friends pass you by, some with baby strollers, some with instruments in hand, or those gigantic turkey legs. There, in those memories, somewhere. in eh back of them, is Kathy Friesen, working her tail off to make it happen.
She was such a pillar for the tumbleweed board of directors for many, many years. She was a worker bee, one that did whatever needed to be done for the benefit of the greater good. She had the work ethics of a farmer, the patience and perseverance of a school teacher, and smarts that can only come from the University of Kansas. She gave the world two beautiful kids. Kathy used her two hands to help others and make a lot of poster board and sharpie signs for the festival.
A need rarely had to be asked of Kathy, because she usually already had it done.
She could be so soft and so loud at the same time, a true skill. She had a servant’s heart, one that was happy to be engaging in civic duty.
She was such a strong and powerful force yet as graceful as they come. A working engine, steadfast and forward moving, yet gentle in demeanor and a true delight to be around. Kathy will be sorely missed but so shall she now soar. Kathy, thank you for allowing me and the rest of the team to be in your life. And thanks for kicking the tumbleweed a little further on down the road all these years."
